Abstract
The origins of mindfulness within Buddhist philosophy and practice are investigated as a preliminary to the treatment of contemporary perspectives of mindfulness-based notions in recent secular therapeutic perspectives. Attitudinal pre-requisites and underpinning values are identified in the process of outlining the key features of mindfulness – both ancient and modern – and in describing how these function in various accounts of practice. In conclusion, these principal themes are examined within the framework of the links between mindfulness, psychology and psychotherapy.
