Abstract
The links between education and therapy are examined through a comparison of the aims and procedures of therapeutic processes – specifically the mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) strategies I am advocating throughout – with a range of traditional and modern philosophical perspectives on education and related concepts. This account is reinforced by discussing the aims of education in relation to mental health, the emotions and general well-being against the background of recent discussions within philosophy of education on the nature and scope of education. In conclusion, the idea put forward by Smeyers, Smith and Standish (The therapy of education. Palgrave Macmillan, London, 2007) that education has much to learn from therapy is investigated as a preliminary to later discussions of these connections.
