Samenvatting

Het beoordelen van de systolische (ook wel: contractiele) functie van de linker ventrikel is een cruciaal onderdeel van het echocardiografisch onderzoek bij elke patiënt met een hartafwijking of met verdenking daarop. Het beoordelen van de systolische functie van de linker ventrikel helpt bij het stellen van de diagnose en bij het bepalen van de beste behandelstrategie. Daarnaast hangt de prognose van vrijwel alle hartziekten sterk af van de mate waarin de linker ventrikel in staat is zijn systolische functie uit te oefenen. Met behulp van echocardiografie is snel betrouwbare informatie over de contractiele functie te krijgen, terwijl het veilig en weinig belastend is voor de patiënt, ongelimiteerd kan worden herhaald en goedkoop is. Dit maakt echocardiografie bij uitstek geschikt voor het bepalen van de linkerventrikelfunctie bij zowel acute als chronische hartziekten. Meerdere technieken staan de echocardiografist ter beschikking om de contractiele functie van de linker ventrikel, kwalitatief en kwantitatief, uitgebreid of minder uitgebreid, te beschrijven. Deze technieken worden in dit hoofdstuk behandeld.
