Samenvatting
Het transoesofageale onderzoek kan additionele informatie leveren bij het transthoracale onderzoek. De doorsneden die door het hart worden gemaakt zijn anders dan bij transthoracaal onderzoek. Een transoesofageaal onderzoek levert ook betere informatie over structuren aan de achterzijde van het hart, zoals het linker atrium, de mitralisklep, de longvenen en de aorta descendens, dan het transthoracale onderzoek. Doordat de transoesofageale transducer zich vlak bij deze structuren bevindt kan een hogere frequentie worden gebruikt dan bij transthoracale echocardiografie, waardoor een betere resolutie wordt verkregen. De driedimensionale beoordeling van de mitralisklep levert zeer goede beelden op. Een transoesofageaal onderzoek moet echter wel worden gezien als semi-invasief: er wordt een probe ingebracht, wat gepaard gaat met een gering risico. Soms moet de patiënt worden gesedeerd of onder lichte narcose worden gebracht. Al deze aspecten worden in dit hoofdstuk behandeld.
