Samenvatting
De rechter ventrikel (RV) heeft binnen de cardiologie en de echocardiografie lange tijd minder aandacht gekregen dan de linker ventrikel (LV). Er werd gedacht dat de RV-functie amper een bijdrage levert aan de cardiac output. De vorm van de RV laat bovendien geen eenvoudige wiskundige modellen toe om het volume te berekenen. Onder andere door een toename van het aantal patiënten met congenitale hartafwijkingen is duidelijk geworden dat stoornissen in de functie van de RV belangrijke implicaties hebben voor de behandeling en de prognose van patiënten met bijvoorbeeld volumebelasting van de RV (atriumseptumdefect, pulmonalisinsufficiëntie), pulmonale hypertensie en myocardinfarct. In dit hoofdstuk worden de echografische methoden voor het bepalen van grootte en functie van de RV besproken. Ook de bepaling van de druk in de RV en de interactie tussen RV en LV krijgen aandacht.
