Abstract
Cerebral disorders commonly cause psychiatric symptoms. It is recommended to call psychiatric symptoms or syndromes that are caused by organic cerebral disorders “neuropsychiatric symptoms” or “neuropsychiatric syndromes.” And, in this context, cerebral disorders, which cause psychiatric symptoms, are called neuropsychiatric disorders. The main characteristics of neuropsychiatric symptoms are (1) concurrent occurrence of the various psychiatric symptoms, (2) cognitive impairment as a core symptom, (3) the possibility of early cerebral symptoms, and (4) occasional resemblance to endogenous psychiatric disorders. The characteristics of neuropsychiatric symptoms, namely, anxiety, neurotic complaint, apathy, mood disorder, hallucinations, delusions, behavioral and personality changes, delirium, and cognitive impairment (dementia), are discussed briefly.
