Abstract

Although the infant’s skin is sterile in utero, it becomes contaminated in the birth canal. For the rest of an individual’s life, varying types and numbers of microorganisms reside on the skin and mucous membranes. One distinguishes between resident flora, which are always present; temporary resident flora, which are established for a period of time; and transient flora, which only are found briefly. In addition, there are many different ecological niches on the human skin, ranging from moist to dry to oily (sebum-rich).
