Diseases of Connective Tissue

  • Chapter
Dermatology

Abstract

A wide variety of quite different diseases are discussed in this chapter. Their one unifying feature is abnormalities of the dermis, both quantitative, such as atrophy or hypertrophy, and qualitative with abnormal collagen, elastin, fibroblasts and ground substance. At the same time such disorders typically also affect the adnexal structures, nerves and vessels all of which are in intimate relation with the connective tissue. The heterogeneity of these disorders is underscored by the various etiologic factors: inherited disorders, infections, autoimmune diseases and inflammatory processes whose causes are poorly understood. There are many overlaps with other chapters. Blistering diseases, some of which involve constituents of the very uppermost layers of the dermis, are covered in Chapter 15. Connective tissue nevi are dealt with in Chapter 52, while scars, keloids and tumor-like proliferations are considered in Chapter 59.
