Abstract
The skin is exceptionally resistant to mechanical forces. Depending on the nature and duration of the mechanical stress, the skin response is quite variable. Acute pressure, such as the rubbing of a new pair of shoes, may produce separation within the epidermis or at the epidermal-dermal junction, creating a blister. Less severe chronic pressure produces a thickened epidermis with hyperkeratosis and acanthosis. A wide variety of clinical patterns may develop that are sometimes associated with hyperpigmentation.
