Abstract

An individual’s innate and acquired sense of orientation normally manifests itself as a subliminal awareness of his own body and its movements. This is as true of the physiotherapist as it is of the patient. Since it is the therapist’s aim to promote natural and efficient movement, she should make use of the patient’s subconscious feeling for movement and his body, guiding him through manipulation (‘handling’) or instruction by words and gestures as her own insight directs.
