Quality of Life Assessment: International Perspectives

Summary

Health economics has benefitted from, and contributed towards, the field of health-related quality of life (HRQL). This chapter describes the framework of economic evaluation and shows where, and why, measures of HRQL are used. The main contribution of health economics has occurred in the area of valuation, and a range of valuation techniques is presented. Increased demand for economic evaluations by central level decision-makers all over the world has resulted in the development of league tables of cost-effectiveness and the raising of justifiable questions regarding international comparability of costs and HRQL.
