Abstract
My general purpose in this paper is to provide a formulation of the process of responding to a personality questionnaire item. In this venture I have four specific aims: (a) To outline the possible benefits of a process-oriented response model for personality assessment and to relate such a model to previous work; (b) to provide the elements of a threshold conception for personality assessment and to show how it can account for factors previously identified as the largest factors on tests of psychopathology; (c) to present a method for scaling personality item content based on response methods; and (d) to demonstrate how such item scale values can be used to evaluate an extension of the threshold concept to responses to personality item content.
