Zusammenfassung
Fast 20% aller Wirbelsäulenverletzungen sind mit einer Rückenmarkläsion verbunden. In den hochtechnisierten Ländem beträgt die Frequenz verletzungsbedingter Tetra- und Paraplegien etwas mehr als 10 auf 1 Million Einwohner pro Jahr. Derzeit stehen in der Bundesrepublik 15, in der Schweiz und Österreich je 2 Kliniken für die Erstversorgung und Rehabilitation vorwiegend traumatisch Querschnittgelähmter zur Verfügun (Tabelle 5.2.1). Durch die Einrichtung dieser Spezialabteilungen, welche die von Sir Ludwig Guttmann entwickelten Behandlungsmethoden anwenden, konnte die Mortalität Rückenmarkverletzter von nahezu 100 aufunter 10% gesenkt werden.
