The Mechanical Significance of the Gross Structure of the Cortex in Normal and Pathologically Bent Tubular Bones

  • Chapter
Biomechanics of the Locomotor Apparatus

Abstract

According to the theory of Roux concerning the functional structure of bone, it is not only the spongiosa but also the bone as a whole that is built with the greatest economy of material. If this conception, not as yet proven, is correct, then the three following requirements have to be satisfied:

  1. 1)

    Throughout the whole length of a tubular bone there must be an equal resistance to the decisive stressing of the bone;

  2. 2)

    this resistance must be obtained with the smallest possible quantity of material;

  3. 3)

    the gross cortical structure must be orientated in such a manner that the osteons offer the greatest possible resistance to stress.
