Abstract

The biological bases of bone transplantation have been published in a series of works. However, except for some vague indications, nothing accurate is found in the literature concerning the mechanical principles of bone grafting. It is known that a graft can be endangered by mechanical stressing. Therefore, Lexer recommended the use of a very strong graft. But concerning the type and the magnitude of the stressing of the graft and of the donor bone, we have found nothing in the literature until lately.

Translated into French and presented at the 50th Congress of the Société Belge de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie by my pupil, Doctor P. Maquet. The publication has been subsidized by the Centre de Recherches et de Documentation, Chaudfontaine. Acta Orthop. Belg. 37, 701–725(1974).
