Abstract

An alteration in the normal shape of a bone, for example a pathological incurvation of a bone of an extremity, causes an alteration in the stressing even if the external forces remain unchanged. We have previously shown the relationship between the distribution of the material in a tubular bone and the quantitative distribution of the local stressing (see Pauwels, Z. Anat. 115, 327–351 (1950) and 117, 497–503 (1954), see chapters 7 and 8 of the present book). If this relation is correct, the distribution of the bony material in the deformed element of the skeleton must deviate from the normal in such a way that the mass of material is everywhere adapted to the new magnitude of the local stressing. The examination of three femora deformed by rickets offered an opportunity to verify this theoretical deduction2.
