Metastatic disease in long bones is frequent: it is assumed that about 15% of all carcinomas manifest skeletal metastases, a figure increasing to 30% if autopsic material is evaluated [3]. Bone metastases threaten the functional autonomy of patients whose life expectancy is becoming longer and longer thanks to progress in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy in the treatment of carcinomas. Fixation of pathological fractures and stabilization of impending fractures is essential in maintaining an appropriate level of function. The fixation device must allow immediate weight-bearing and create a mechanical by-pass through the pathological area for a much longer period than for the treatment of traumatic fractures.
