Nicht nur bei Erwachsenen, sondern auch bei Kindern und Jugendlichen nehmen Häufigkeit und Schweregrade von Übergewicht und Adipositas alarmierend zu (Koletzko et al. 2002). Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO bezeichnet Übergewicht inzwischen als globale Epidemie (World Health Organisation 1998). Der starke Häufigkeitsanstieg hängt mit einer zunehmenden körperlichen Inaktivität bereits im Kindesalter und sich deutlich verändernden Ernährungsgewohnheiten zusammen.
