Abstract
In the U.S., there are few programs designed to influence the political socialization of adolescents. As part of a broader movement toward volunteerism, a growing number of programs involve service to others, but there is a continuum of adolescent involvement in social change efforts associated with political socialization. At one end of this continuum is “community service,” which does not link activities to political systems or focus on social change. In this approach, adolescents typically work to meet a short-term service need in the community. A little further along this continuum, activities described as “service learning” have clearly identified learning objectives, student involvement in identifying or designing the activity, integration of service with academic curriculum, and opportunities for reflection that might include political analysis (Pritchard 2002). The focus of these programs is on changing the participants or meeting immediate service needs, rather than on the implications of the service for social change.
