Abstract
This chapter offers a summary of the ideas covered in the book and a perspective on future research. The chapter summarises the various theoretical proposals reviewed in the earlier chapters. Despite several years of intensive research on the cognitive consequences of bilingualism, some of the core issues remain unsettled. I have highlighted that individual differences in executive control should be taken up more seriously, including understanding the integration between bilingualism and cognition in a more diversified international context. Newer methodologies and analysis methods might be helpful in clearing up some of the confusion. I also touch upon some of the current global issues such as migration and the refugee crisis in this chapter. Since bilingualism is a social phenomenon, it is necessary to take into consideration such social changes and examine their impact. It is time bilingualism research moves out of the laboratory and that factors previously ignored such as the social and linguistic context of the bilingualism are considered more specifically.
