Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to various questions of bilingualism, its practice and its possible cognitive consequences. It presents myriad issues related to such neuroplasticity caused by bilingualism, and considers the diverse and complex range of ideas and debates in this field. The various theoretical issues and controversies related to the question of the cognitive advantage as a function of bilingualism are introduced and outlines critiques of the most recent studies in this area from the perspective of cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and psycholinguistics.
