Handbook of Cancer Survivorship

Abstract

There are an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors living in the USA, and 62% of survivors are 65 years or older. Older cancer survivors may have unique needs, values, and preferences. Among older cancer survivors, there is heterogeneity in overall health and wellness. Therefore, while age is an important factor, chronological age alone is an insufficient proxy for health status upon which to base cancer treatment and survivorship decisions. In this chapter, we discuss (1) the increasing prevalence and needs of older cancer survivors; (2) why older cancer patients are unique, including clinical differences, financial differences, and patient preferences and decision-making; (3) late effects of cancer treatment and age mimicry; as well as (4) survivorship care delivery for older patients, including shared models of care and comprehensive geriatric oncology assessments.
