Abstract

Controversies related to the definition of specific learning disability and the methods used to diagnosis this condition have long been a foremost concern in assessment-related fields. The publication of new criteria for diagnosing a specific learning disorder in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th ed. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Association, 2013) has fueled such controversies. This chapter begins with a brief history of learning disabilities, including the diagnostic criteria for learning disorders in the five editions of the DSM. Next, etiology, associated impairments and comorbidities, course and developmental changes, prognosis, outcomes, and treatment are highlighted. This chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the most salient vagaries inherent in the latest diagnostic criteria for specific learning disorder in the DSM-5, many of which will be debated for some time to come.
