Abstract

Childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric disorder that affects a sizable amount of youth. Characterized by intrusive obsessions and/or compulsions, OCD has been linked with various deleterious outcomes, such as decreased quality of life and heightened functional impairment. Working with youth with OCD necessitates various considerations, such as level of insight into the symptomology, integrating family into treatment, and degree of symptom accommodation in the family. As such, a holistic understanding of the disorder and its complicating factors are required for the effective treatment of pediatric OCD. Consequently, this chapter aims to review the diagnostic criteria, etiology, symptom presentation, associated clinical characteristics, course and prognosis, and treatment of pediatric OCD.
