Accounting for Marijuana Use in Adolescence and Young Adulthood

Problem Behavior Theory and Adolescent Health

Abstract

This chapter documents the increased prevalence of both marijuana and cocaine use among different local and national samples of adolescent and young adults since the 1970s. Given this increase, some experience with marijuana having become statistically normative by the early 1980s in these samples, the study examines the degree of invariance between the psychosocial correlates of marijuana use that obtained in the 1970s and the correlates that obtain a decade later in the 1980s. The overriding conclusion from the research is in support of invariance despite a later historical time and a substantial increase in prevalence. As was the case at the earlier time, the findings for the later time show the same association of marijuana use with other problem behaviors—the problem behavior syndrome—and the same pattern of psychosocial correlates, a pattern of psychosocial conventionality.
