Abstract
The obesity epidemic is a well-recognized phenomenon in North America and has led to the recognition of obesity as a disease by the American Medical Association. Moreover, this rapid increase in the prevalence of obesity has been a driver for the increased focus on treatments for severe obesity, specifically weight loss surgery. As a result of the complex psychiatric co-morbidities in severely obese patient populations, mental health needs have been recognized as a critical component to caring for obese patients in clinicians’ practice.
