Abstract

Children with developmental disabilities are at increased risk of maltreatment and of entering the child protection system. Maltreatment and adverse early experiences can seriously exacerbate a child’s disability. Nurturing, stable and consistent family based foster care can make a positive impact on a child’s development. Factors associated with optimal outcomes in foster care for children with developmental disabilities include, placement stability, consistency in care giving, and specialist support for foster carers. Therapeutic or treatment foster care programs provide a much higher level of support to these children and their foster carers than generic foster care.
