Abstract
Learners may present with struggles in communication and interpersonal skills because of lack of knowledge, unfavorable attitude, low skill level, or a combination of these factors. Communication struggles may also derive from institutional overemphasis on the biomedical interviewing model, facets of cultural or language diversity, or learners’ psychological makeup and psychiatric background. For learners who need remediation in communication and interpersonal skills, we have found success by modeling our approach on seven principles of relationship-centered care, coaching, and effective feedback. We present cases that illustrate these principles.
