Abstract
This opening chapter sets out a broad vision of what remediation is or might be, how it relates to health professional training and practice, and what its values are or should be. The chapter is articulated around a series of axioms: that remediation is contextual, that the boundaries and boundary practices of remediation are a reflection of its values, that remediation is a boundary practice that intersects with many other boundary practices; that remediation can feel stressful and stigmatic but not intrinsically, that remediation must be effective, proportionate, just, and fair; and that remediation is and must be understood as a part of larger systems of health professional education and practice.
