Abstract
The classification of the pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can sometimes be challenging and uncertain. For decades, gastroenterologists have attempted to classify the phenotype and disease type of patients. From consensus meetings in Vienna and Montreal, the evolution of the classification of IBD is a fascinating story. The Paris modification of the Montreal classification attempts to address the intricacies of childhood-onset IBD by specifying unique phenotypes in this population. Advances in classification systems have advanced our understanding of IBD and aided in treatment choice, prognosis and research endeavors. Most recently, the IBD classes system has helped clarify features of Ulcerative Colitis (UC), Crohn Disease (CD), and IBD-unclassified (IBD-U).
