Abstract
The present chapter includes an update of a previously published chapter on the history of functional analysis. This edition outlines the development of the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and the advent of behavioral functional analyses (FA). Methodological extensions of the initial FA study described by Iwata and colleagues over the years are summarized. The chapter includes descriptions of expansions of functional analyses across methodology, populations, behaviors, settings and individuals, idiosyncratic variables, and duration. This chapter also touches on pivotal studies as well as relevant reviews of the literature. Crucial current issues are identified and future directions for the field of functional analysis are discussed.
