Abstract
To date, a large number of research studies show that during pregnancy, in addition to the individual transformations of mothers and fathers, there is the birth of the emerging coparenting relationship. Direct observation is crucial to assessing the coparenting subsystem, and the advent of the prenatal version of the Lausanne Trilogue Play (Fivaz-Depeursinge and Corboz-Warnery1999) was a milestone for studies on prenatal coparenting. Even more complex than prenatal observations of coparenting is the collection and analysis of coparenting representations during pregnancy. This chapter aims to present some preliminary findings concerning prenatal coparenting interactions and representations. Twenty primiparous couples were observed during an adapted version of the Prenatal Lausanne Trilogue Play, (PLTP; Carneiro et al., 2006), which replaced the doll in the PLTP with a short video of the couples’ fetus recorded during their last 4D routine ultrasound. We found that the fetal image in the 4D ultrasound video triggered some coparenting and intuitive parenting behaviors such as smiles and baby talk toward the fetus. At a representational level, extracts from our conjoint semi-structured interview with pregnant couples showed different ways in which couples prepare for their transition to becoming a family.
