Clinical Assessment of Child and Adolescent Personality and Behavior

Abstract

This chapter focuses on how basic research on children’s and adolescents’ emotional and behavioral functioning should be used to guide clinical assessments. Topics include a discussion of how classification and assessment are related and how various models of classification (e.g., medical models, behavioral models) can influence the assessment process. Topics also include a discussion of both the advantages and disadvantages of using classification systems to make diagnoses of children and adolescents, as well as review of the strengths and weaknesses of some commonly used classification systems (e.g., the DSM-5 and RDoC). Finally, the chapter highlights some important implications from research in developmental psychopathology for the clinical assessment of children and adolescents.
