Abstract

Varus hindfoot deformity may increase the risk of chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). We retrospectively analyzed hindfoot alignment (HFA) using weight bearing CT (WBCT) by measuring the foot ankle offset (FAO) using dedicated semiautomatic software (TALAS, Curvebeam, Hattfield, PA, USA) in 370 consecutive feet. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for sex and age demonstrated a 35% increased odds ratio of CLAI per 1% reduction in FAO value (varus) and no significant effect of sex or age after adjustment for FAO.

Systematic recording of FAO measurements from WBCT images along with clinical history proved successful at quantifying the risk of CLAI.
