A New Concept of 3D Biometrics for Hindfoot Alignment Using Weight Bearing CT

Weight Bearing Cone Beam Computed Tomography (WBCT) in the Foot and Ankle

Abstract

A new semiautomatic system (TALAS™) designed for weight bearing CT (WBCT) was used to calculate a 3D biometric: the foot ankle offset (FAO). We retrospectively analyzed the distribution of FAO from 135 cases. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability was also assessed.

In normal cases, the mean value for FAO was 2.38% ± 2.96, whereas in varus and valgus cases, the mean was −11.67% ± 6.90 and 11.47% ± 5.79 (P < 0.001). The distribution was Gaussian.

This pilot study suggests that the FAO is an efficient tool in measuring hindfoot alignment using WBCT.
