Health Is Political: Advocacy and Mobilization for Latinx Health

Abstract

Health is political. In this chapter, the role of politics in Latinx health is outlined, and frameworks are suggested to promote Latinx health. This chapter includes an exploration of the political nature of health followed by an overview of what are referred to as health disparities and health inequities. The social determinants of health framework and proven strategies to improve Latinx health are briefly outlined. Systemic changes for Latino health promotion are suggested, including an example of contemporary actions taken to address health inequities present in Puerto Rico. This chapter is written with the desire to effect change to improve Latinx health and well-being.
