Abstract

You can see that the study of consensual S & M does not reveal the nature of sadomasochism. Freud saw the need to take on that ancient challenge, but it broke him,* as it has philosophers and theologians. His great advance was to try to introduce scientific method—controlled observation—as a test of introspection, a development that transformed the philosophy and theology of the nonliving physical world, of plants, and of animals into science.
