Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Psychiatry ((CIPS))

Abstract

It is only since the early 1970s that children and adolescents have been diagnosed with psychiatric disorders as described in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals. These diagnostic criteria have been expanded and revised four times to keep up with the progress in research in child and adolescent psychiatry. The expanding knowledge of child development, neurology, pharmacology, genetics, maternal and infant health, epidemiology, and adult disorders has led to a growth in the understanding of childhood disorders. In order to diagnose accurately, one must be able to assess the history, course, and presentation of symptoms, including the biological, medical, psychosocial, family, and school areas. Therefore, this chapter reviews a selection of the currently available methods for assessing behavioral and psychiatric problems in children and adolescents as they are commonly seen in a psychiatric setting. The major categorization of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is presented.
