Abstract

A variety of terms—globally including alcohol problems, alcohol abuse, problem drinking, alcohol dependence, and alcoholism—have been used to refer to a disorder that has cost individuals and the societies they live in dearly. For example, one study provided the conservative estimate that, in 1980, problems attributable to alcohol use cost U.S. citizens almost $90 billion (Harwood, Napolitano, Kristiansen, & Collins, 1984). Of course, such financial cost in no way addresses the major pain and suffering that individuals experience directly or indirectly because of alcohol abuse. In keeping with these staggering human and financial costs, considerable investment has been made in finding ways to effectively modify, or treat, harmful alcohol use.
