Abstract
Most of the chapters in this volume are tied to published empirical research. This is not just a requirement of scholarship, it is also one of the few approaches to avoid the oft-repeated mischief and confusion triggered by unsubstantiated theory and opinion. We believe in rationality and the rules of evidence, as the fragile levers by which progress in the understanding and treatment of autism are advanced. Most of the contributors to this volume, including myself, have spent a significant portion of their professional careers dedicated to empirical research conducted with scientific methodology.
