Abstract
Observations of doting parents, as well as some experimental data (Emde & Koenig, 1969; Wolff, 1963) indicate that infants smile—and perhaps experience joy—during the first days of life. These early smiles typically occur during drowsiness or light sleep, raising the fascinating question as to whether an emotion mechanism is operating spontaneously or the infant is responding to inborn images.
