Brief Treatment and Mental Health Policy

  • Chapter
Handbook of the Brief Psychotherapies

Part of the book series: Applied Clinical Psychology ((NSSB))

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss brief psychotherapeutic treatment as a means for initiating a cost-effective and integrated mental health delivery system. It is the assumption of this chapter that mental health services are an integral part of the larger health care delivery system. Brief oriented psychotherapy will be used in this chapter to describe the planned and conscious use of time in problem-focused and structured therapy of not more than 20 sessions. The issues of access to services, cost, and quality of services, as well as integration of mental health services with medical services, will form the framework for proposing a mental health delivery system that features brief treatment as the focal point for delivering mental health services. Although the recommendations in this chapter can apply to a centrally financed mental health system, the issue of national health insurance will not be addressed in this chapter.
