Abstract
Benign Rolandic Epilepsy of Childhood (BREC) has been known to proceed along two distinct patterns of development (Gregory and Wong, 1984; Wong, Gregory, and Farrell, 1985). In the first pattern seizure episodes occur in children between 4 and 14 years of age, but do not occur after this time period. This pattern has been labelled Typical BREC. The second pattern is similarly characterised by seizures within the 4 to 14 year age range. At the same time, these seizures are accompanied by neurological abnormalities which may include neurological deficits such as hemiplegia; and behaviours such as poor school performance. This pattern has been labelled Atypical BREC. An early diagnosis of either Atypical or Typical BREC would allow the application of interventive procedures at an early age in the case of Atypical BREC. In the case of Typical BREC, early diagnosis might prevent problems such as psycho-emotional and behavioural disturbances resulting from the biased social attitudes which are often associated with a diagnosis of epilepsy (Geladze, Toidze, and Lomashvili, 1983).
