Abstract

Since the late 1970s, behavior therapists have turned their attention to the assessment (Hersen, 1981; Rehm, 1976) and treatment of unipolar depression (cf. Craighead, 1980; Hersen, Bellack, & Himmelhoch, 1982; Kovacs, 1979; Lewinsohn, 1975; Lewinsohn & Hoberman, 1982; Rehm, 1977; Rehm & Kornblith, 1979; Wolpe, 1979). The word unipolar here refers to an affective disorder of nonpsychotic proportions. During the long history of changing diagnostic labels, such depression has alternatively been referred to as reactive, neurotic, or unipolar. Some authorities in the field (e.g., Wolpe, 1979) still continue to speak of “neurotic depression” in spite of the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), which refers to it as a Major Depressive Episode.
