Abstract

Many people are familiar with temporary feelings of apprehension in certain social situations, such as having to speak to an audience, to perform in public, or to talk to authority persons. When such feelings become so prominent that social situations are avoided or life is dominated by a constantly present anticipatory fear, a diagnosis of social phobia can be justified. Criteria in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) for social phobia (alternatively labeled as Social Anxiety Disorder) are provided in Table 4.1.
