Abstract
Diagnostic categories are the defining terminology for the study, classification, and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Each diagnostic term implies a coherent subset of symptoms from a larger possible grouping. A diagnosis also carries inherent implications regarding the disorder’s possible etiology, natural history, and treatment response. Diagnostic classification systems are essential for scientific study of disease and for accurate communication between clinicians. Such systems allow clinicians to move beyond the anecdotal and case-report approach.
