Abstract

Most professionals who serve children and their families are busy at their tasks of treatment, teaching, or research and rarely take time to think of public policy as it relates to their work. We are only dimly aware of actions taken in far-away legislative halls or courts that often affect us and our ability to do our tasks well and to serve our clients effectively. Just as the child, when asked where milk comes from, may answer, “The refrigerator,” we, when asked where our jobs come from, may answer, “The hospital or the university,” without pursuing further why the university decided to use one of its precious positions to focus on our area of specialty.
