Abstract
The end-stage renal patient is inevitably faced with multiple psychosocial problems evoked (or intensified) by his illness. Yet, by and large, he is deprived of the services which would enable him to cope with these difficulties. My purpose in this chapter, is (1) to discuss the nature of the variables that impeded the provision of psychological services to these chronically ill patients; (2) to describe in general terms the nature of their “psychological difficulties”; and, finally, (3) to propose a solution which would make adequate psychological care available to this population. The solution consists of a description of the psychosocial teaching program currently in operation at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, and of the mechanisms for funding which have made this teaching program a reality.
This work was supported in part by Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health, Administration special training grant MH-13041 from the National Institute of Mental Health. This paper is an expanded version of: The liaison teaching unit: a funding mechanism for the psychological care of the Chronic Renal Patient.1
