Menarche and Dysmenorrhea

  • Chapter
Girls at Puberty

Abstract

Menarche is one of the more dramatic signs of female puberty. It occurs late in puberty; for example, menarche occurs during Tanner Stage 4 in two-thirds of females, and in another stage for the other one-third. Tanner staging or classification of sex maturity rating is the clinical determination of secondary sex characteristics for ascertaining developmental age (see Daniel, Chapter 3). Staging of secondary sex characteristics is a relatively convenient and practical method for determining developmental age. Developmental age is superior to chronological age as a predictor for many hormonal, biochemical, and behavioral characteristics during adolescence (Gross and Duke, 1980; Rauh, 1976).
