The Significance of Environmental Factors for the Design and the Evaluation of Alcohol Treatment Programs

  • Chapter
Determinants of Substance Abuse

Abstract

An increasing body of evidence suggests that environmental factors can influence the long-term treatment outcome of alcohol abusers.* Certain environmental factors have also been found to be positively associated with the natural recovery (i.e., without treatment) of individuals with alcohol problems. Much of this evidence, however, comes from studies designed to answer other research questions (e.g., the comparative effectiveness of various treatments). In this chapter, the research describing the relationships between environmental factors and outcomes is briefly reviewed, and the implications of this research for the design and evaluation of treatment are discussed.
